No decision about a purchase was believed to have been made in the tender, which closed on Sunday. Offers must remain valid until Aug. 16.

The lowest offer was made for 40,000 tonnes. Another offer for Thai rice was made at $469.80 a tonne c&f free out, traders said.

Most offers were made for rice from Uruguay, with the lowest price at $568.75 a tonne c&f free out.

Lowest offer for US rice was $655 a tonne c&f free out.

Other offers were made for rice from Paraguay at $585 a tonne c&f free out, from Argentina at $594.70 a tonne c&f free out and Vietnam at $546.50 a tonne c&f free out.

Iraq in June banned farmers from planting rice and other water-intensive crops in the face of increasing shortages because of drought and shrinking river flows, increasing its import requirement.

In its last reported rice tender on May 11, Iraq purchased about 60,000 tonnes to be sourced from Argentina and Paraguay.
